Rota and Morón Bases: Why Morocco Is Not Yet a US Alternative

The continuity of the US presence in Spain is supported by investments amounting to hundreds of millions of euros. More than 300 million are currently being mobilized to extend docks, build ammunition depots and improve supply areas at Rota, making any major logistical transfer to Moroccan territory highly unlikely.

The US foothold is also being reinforced by the planned arrival of a sixth destroyer within the NATO missile shield. Currently, two ships based at Rota, the USS Roosevelt and the USS Bulkeley, are already participating in Operation «Epic Fury» in the eastern Mediterranean to help defend Israel, illustrating the continued operational importance of the Spanish enclave.

The departure of the KC-135 aircraft follows the implementation of the 1988 cooperation agreement, with the Spanish government considering the strikes against Iran to be unilateral action without an international mandate.
