Deadly Migrant Clash at Spanish Enclave Sparks Algeria-Morocco Tensions

Amar Belani, special envoy in charge of the Western Sahara issue and the Maghreb countries at the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, accuses Morocco of being responsible for the Melilla drama and calls for an independent and transparent investigation. While nearly 2,000 undocumented migrants of African origin tried to enter the Spanish enclave on Friday, June 24, 37 of them died in clashes with Moroccan security forces.
"These tragic events highlight the systematic violation of human rights by a state that has chosen, on the one hand, to instrumentalize the scarecrow of migratory submersion for political blackmail purposes and, on the other hand, to play the role of gendarme - for hard cash - in the context of the externalization of the management of the European Union’s external borders," denounced Amar Belani in a statement to TSA. According to him, the Melilla drama shows that "we are very far from the [...] exemplary role dramatized during the holding of the Marrakech summit of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration".
The Algerian diplomat joins the voices calling for the opening of a thorough and independent investigation into the drama. "The international bodies and more specifically the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees must order independent and transparent investigations to determine the responsibilities and shed light on these tragic events [...], he demanded.
