Deadly floods in Morocco: the death toll rises to 21 in the province of Safi

The death toll is increasing by the hour in the province of Safi. The torrential rains that hit on Sunday evening have left 21 dead and caused major damage, prompting the authorities to suspend classes to secure the population.

The disaster has taken on a tragic scale. While the initial estimates reported seven victims, the latest toll communicated by the local authorities now puts the number of deaths at 21. The emergency services have also managed to save 32 people, the majority of whom were able to leave the hospital after receiving care, although some remain under medical supervision. Faced with this tragedy and as a precautionary measure, the provincial Directorate of National Education has decreed the closure of all school establishments in the city for the day of Monday, December 15, 2025.

These deadly floods are the result of exceptionally intense thunderstorms concentrated over a short period of time. The city bears the scars of this sudden rise in water, particularly in the medina where homes and businesses have been submerged. The road network has also suffered, with the closure of provincial road 2300 connecting Safi to the commune of Hrara, and many vehicles have been swept away by the current.

On the ground, the mobilization remains at its maximum. Local authorities, civil protection and law enforcement continue the search and restoration operations. Pending a return to normal, a call for vigilance has been issued to the inhabitants, who are invited to strictly limit their movements in the risk areas.
