Crime Plummets 99% in Morocco During Coronavirus Lockdown

The general lockdown imposed to contain the spread of the coronavirus has had the merit of causing a considerable drop in various forms of crime as well as traffic accidents.
Crime has decreased by 99% since the state of health emergency, reports the daily Al Ahdath Al Maghribia, which points out that the presence of law enforcement in all the different cities, and even in the streets and neighborhoods to enforce the lockdown measures, has helped to reduce the crime rate. We must also count on the frequent routine patrols, which remain real deterrents against the often recorded forms of crime.
According to the newspaper, murders and violent thefts have decreased by 8%. Car thefts have decreased by 7.78%; qualified thefts under the threat of a knife have fallen by 21% and exchanges of blows resulting in death have fallen by 11.7%.
In addition to the crime that has considerably decreased, the lockdown has also had positive effects on the high rate of traffic accidents. During the week of March 23 to 29, 2020, the number of traffic accidents saw a significant drop compared to the average previously recorded. During this week, five people were killed and 271 others were injured, including 10 seriously, in 218 traffic accidents that occurred in urban areas.
