Crackdown in Tanger Med: the BNPJ takes down a network of corrupt officials (police and customs)
The Moroccan police opened a judicial investigation on Thursday targeting 24 people, including police officers and customs officials, suspected of corruption and smuggling at the port of Tanger Med to facilitate the illegal passage of goods.
The General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) announced the opening of a judicial investigation into alleged acts of corruption and abuse of office within the port complex. Among the accused are six police officers, six territorial surveillance officials (DGST) and two customs agents, suspected of having failed in their professional duties in exchange for bribes.
The investigation, conducted by the National Brigade of the Judicial Police (BNPJ) under the authority of the public prosecutor’s office, focuses on a system of facilitating smuggling. The agents involved would have exploited their influence to allow the passage of prohibited persons and products by deliberately circumventing customs control mechanisms, in exchange for secret commissions.
The investigations were triggered by precise information provided by the internal control services. The latter had detected systematic anomalies in the transit surveillance procedures at the port level. The investigators were able to identify several beneficiaries of these fraudulent practices who thus managed to evade the regulatory inspections.
All the suspects are currently subject to the measures of the judicial investigation in order to determine the degree of responsibility of each one. The DGSN specified that the investigations are continuing actively to identify any possible co-authors or accomplices who have benefited from this corruption network within this strategic logistics platform.
