UN Counter-Terrorism Office to Open in Morocco, Boosting African Security Efforts

Morocco and the United Nations proceeded on Tuesday to the signing via videoconference of an agreement for the installation in the kingdom, of the UNOCT Programme Office for Counter-Terrorism and Training in Africa.
The agreement was signed by Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and UN Under-Secretary-General for Counter-Terrorism Vladimir Voronkov. For the latter, this headquarters agreement is a "natural step" in strengthening Morocco’s counter-terrorism capacity in Africa.
He also stated that this is a "historic event" and a "logical" step forward given Morocco’s "leadership" in the fight against terrorism. He stressed that this is an "extension to Morocco" of the UN counter-terrorism office, in order to encourage other African countries to follow in Morocco’s footsteps, which is making many efforts in this direction.
This office, the first of its kind in Africa, pursues many objectives, all in the logic of a return to security within the States. According to Vladimir Voronkov, it will offer training on counter-terrorism, law enforcement, border security management, prevention of the presence of radicals, and human rights in the fight against terrorism.
