Controversy Erupts as Some Call for Group Ramadan Prayers Despite COVID-19 Restrictions in Morocco

As the month of Ramadan approaches, some Internet users have called for maintaining taraweh prayers in mosques, despite the preventive measures of the Ministry of the Interior to curb the coronavirus epidemic.
Individuals, unaware of the risks involved and motivated by excessive religious fanaticism, have proposed alternative solutions to pray in groups during the month of Ramadan.
Supporting their arguments with a photo of worshippers in Russia standing 1 meter apart during prayer, the initiators seem to have thought of everything: individual prayer mats instead of the mosque’s, disinfection of the place of worship, wearing masks...
Taraweh prayers were not mandatory in the time of the Prophet Muhammad, let alone a pillar of Islam, according to the Akhbarona website. The ritual is said to have been instituted by Omar Ibn Al Khattab, caliph and companion of the prophet, and has become a constant tradition since then.
