Concern Grows as Violent Video Games Linked to Youth Suicides in Morocco

The alarming increase in violence and suicide among Moroccans, mostly very young, due to their addiction to certain video games, particularly "Free Fire" or "Blue Whale", is eliciting reactions from civil society and politicians.
Suicides, murders, video games have become real weapons in the hands of some children and adolescents. The death a few days ago of a mother who refused to give money to her 15-year-old son to continue playing "Free Fire" serves as a reminder of the dangers.
The daily Al Ahdath Al Maghribia reports that in the absence of any legislation to regulate the sector, Internet users have launched a campaign calling on the government to fill the legal void in this area. They will be supported in their momentum by many associative and political voices, who have called for an end to this new deadly addiction.
The Moroccan Association for the Protection of Consumer Rights is calling on the competent authorities to block the online game application called "Blue Whale", because it consists of challenging young people to jump from the roof or hang themselves. It is said to have caused the suicide of several children and adolescents, both girls and boys.
The addiction of children and adolescents to these deadly electronic games has intensified with confinement and the advent of distance learning. As a result, parents are called upon to be vigilant and try to prevent the proliferation of this type of game among children.
