Complaint against the Moroccan government

The tragedy has turned into a legal battle. Faced with a heavy toll of 37 deaths, an association of lawyers points to the direct responsibility of the Executive. A complaint is now targeting the head of government to obtain the declaration of a "disaster area" and force the state to compensate the victims.

The case will be heard before the administrative court of Rabat. The Association has confirmed its intention to engage in "strategic litigation" against the government. The objective is clear: to officially recognize Safi as a disaster area in order to unlock the legal and financial mechanisms necessary to repair the damage suffered by the population.

For the lawyers, these human losses are not only due to the wrath of the sky, but to "shortcomings" in prevention. They accuse the authorities of not having protected the citizens in areas known for their structural fragility and demand an end to impunity.

This legal offensive comes as the city is counting its dead. The latest report from the local authorities states that 37 people have died and 14 have been injured, two of whom are still in intensive care under strict supervision at the Mohammed V hospital.

On the ground, the damage is considerable, particularly in the medina where 70 homes and businesses have been flooded. The violence of the waters swept away a dozen vehicles and cut off several road links, including the one to the commune of Hrara, leaving entire families in extreme vulnerability.
