Colonial archives: an unprecedented gesture by France towards Morocco

As promised by President Emmanuel Macron during his state visit to Rabat at the end of October, France is preparing to return some 2.5 million colonial documents to Morocco.
These historical documents that France is about to return to Morocco would contain evidence of the kingdom’s sovereignty over its territory, including the southern provinces. This is not the first time that France has returned colonial archives to Morocco, notes Jeune Afrique, specifying that Paris had handed over certain archival documents to Rabat in September 2022.
In the past, the French authorities had rejected the official requests of the Moroccan Archives to hand over the archival documents relating to an important period in the history of the kingdom. The new director of this institution, Latifa Moftaqir, should soon travel to Paris to discuss the modalities of the restitution of these colonial documents to Morocco.
