Climate Study Warns: Marrakech Among Cities Facing Major Environmental Shifts by 2050

A study shows how climate change could have a negative impact on some of the world’s most famous cities like Marrakech by 2050.
Carried out by Nestpick.com, a rental platform, a study (Climate Change Index for Cities by 2050) shows the extent to which climate change would affect major metropolises. Total Climate Shift places Bangkok (Thailand) at the top of the cities that could undergo the greatest climate upheaval by 2050. The study warns of a huge risk of flooding due to rising sea levels (100.00) and a temperature increase of 1.67°C. Bangkok is followed by the Chinese city of Ho Chi Minh City (88.67/1.67°C), Amsterdam (89.56/1.26°C), the Chinese city of Shenzhen (28.06/1.85°C) and the Australian city of Melbourne (2.24/1.37°C). Cardiff (UK) is in sixth place with rising sea levels (45.88) and a temperature increase of 1.75°C. Then come Seoul (6.30/2.12°C), the American city of Boston (8.23/2.60), Nairobi (1.00/2.31°C). Marrakech completes the top 10 with rising sea levels (1.00) and a temperature increase of 2.87°C by 2050. Marseille (1.00/1.25) is the city least likely to undergo extreme variation in the next three decades.
To conduct this study, Nestpick.com analyzed several expert studies on climate change and other reports, including Jean-François Bastin’s "Köppen classification" on climate at the University of Ghent, and World Resources Institute data on water scarcity. The platform then drew up a list of 85 cities - part of the ranking of the most popular tourist destinations for Millennials and Generation Z - mentioned in these same studies. "By taking into account climate categorization, sea level changes and water scarcity, we have therefore determined the cities that, according to forecasts, will undergo the most extreme and lightest changes between now and 2050," it explains.
"These results are revealing for our Nestpick teams, as the cities that will undergo the most dramatic changes over the next three decades - Bangkok and Amsterdam - are the most popular destinations for expatriates and entrepreneurs looking for new opportunities abroad. Millennials, Generation Z and the youngest will have to take climate change into account when it comes to finding a city to settle in," says Omer Kucukdere, CEO of Nestpick. And he adds: "Governments must be aware of the potential variations to come in order to reduce the damage. Proper investments in infrastructure and preservation could ensure the future of these urban centers for generations to come."
