UN Clarifies MINURSO Observers’ Brief Presence at Polisario Congress in Western Sahara

The United Nations (UN) explained the "short-term" presence of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) at the Polisario congress.
At a press briefing on Monday, December 23, 2019, Stéphane Dujarric, spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, stated that the two observers, based at their team site in Tifariti, made this visit to the Polisario congress on December 19 as part of their regular monitoring of the situation (in the Sahara) in support of MINURSO’s mandate.
According to him, this ephemeral presence of the two military observers does not justify any political position on their part or on the part of MINURSO. It remains "strictly impartial in the fulfillment of its mandate."
