Child Dies After Falling into Sewer in Moroccan City, Sparking Outrage

Drama in Berkane. A girl of around 8 years old lost her life on Thursday after falling into a sewer while returning from school.
The body of the minor was found in the Chareaa wadi after hours of searching. Her tragic death has sparked a wave of outrage and anger on social media. Internet users hold the authorities responsible for this drama, deploring their laxity regarding the maintenance of infrastructure in certain areas of Berkane.
"Message, once again, to the presidents of the municipalities and the delegated companies: Unblock the sewers! The state of the infrastructure is catastrophic, we do not want to lose other children. It is imperative to monitor the sewers and to strike with an iron fist all the gangs that steal the manhole covers. The theft of these manholes constitutes a danger for pedestrians and for all road users in general," wrote an associative actor on Facebook.
Internet users have also called for a thorough investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the victim’s death and to impose criminal sanctions on all those involved in this case. In this sense, journalist Redouane Ramdani called on lawyers to take over this file and to advise the victim’s family so that it initiates legal proceedings against the alleged perpetrators of her death.
In a post on the same social network, he insisted on the need to bring this case before the courts so that this tragedy serves as a lesson to all the authorities who neglect the maintenance of infrastructure.
