Chicken Prices Surge in Morocco as Wedding Celebrations Resume Post-COVID

In the markets of the kingdom, the price of poultry has suddenly increased by 2 to 3 dirhams per kilo. The authorization of wedding celebrations following the easing of restrictive measures would be at the origin of this sudden increase.

Sold a few days ago between 11 and 13 dirhams, the price of a kilo of chicken now reaches an average of 16 dirhams. Everything happened very quickly after the announcement of the relaxation of the restrictive measures taken to fight the spread of the coronavirus, reports the daily Al Ahdath Al Maghribia, which specifies that the "crossbred" chicken is currently negotiated between 10 and 12 dirhams per kilo.

For their part, the professionals in the sector interviewed by the daily mention, in addition to the resumption of wedding celebrations, the weakness of the supply from the breeders, who have been forced to reduce their production due to the economic repercussions of the Covid-19 pandemic on the sector. Several breeders have even abandoned the activity because of the effects of the health crisis, we are informed in the ranks of poultry professionals.

They also note a sharp increase in the costs of inputs used to feed poultry, particularly products based on corn or soy. This inflation naturally has an impact on the production costs of the breeders, which they pass on to the final customer, hence the rise in the price of chicken, writes the daily.

As for the coming days, the poultry professionals, due to this summer period marked by strong demand for chicken, rule out any hypothesis of a drop in poultry costs. They even fear new increases.
