Chicken Prices Soar in Morocco as Feed Costs Surge, Straining Consumers

Poultry prices have risen considerably in recent days in Morocco, reaching 20 dirhams per kilogram for live chicken. An increase that does not help consumers whose purchasing power is already greatly weakened by the rise in prices of certain basic necessities.
This price increase is mainly due to the rise in the prices of raw materials, explains Saïd Janah, the secretary general of the National Association of Broiler Chicken Producers, to Al Oâmk, indicating that the price of the chick has reached 6 dirhams and that of corn and poultry feed, 2.80 dirhams and 4.70 dirhams respectively.
Now, the production of a chicken costs between 15 and 17 dirhams, he details, specifying that this price increase creates huge losses for producers. Certain diseases affecting livestock, and consequently productivity, yield and quality, would also be the cause of this price increase, says Saïd Janah.
The secretary general of the National Association of Broiler Chicken Producers also called for better management of the poultry sector, which suffers from a monopoly of large companies, urging the authorities to find a balanced solution to this situation, which also relieves consumers and breeders.
