Chariot Strikes Major Gas Discovery Off Morocco Coast, Surpassing Repsol's Earlier Finds

British company Chariot has deepened the exploration of the Anchois 2 well initially carried out by the Spanish company Repsol off the coast of Larache, and has confirmed the presence of a significant amount of gas. A bitter discovery for the Spanish Repsol.

Chariot has reported the discovery of a significant amount of high-quality gas off the coast of Larache, after deepening the drilling and exploration of the Anchois-2 well, following Anchois-1 previously carried out by the Spanish oil company, Repsol. In 2009, Repsol, in partnership with Gas Natural (now Naturgy), had discovered a gas field in Moroccan waters, in the Tangier-Larache region, 40 kilometers from the coast. The Anchois-1 well was drilled to a depth of 2,359 meters, recalls Economia Digital.

At the time, Repsol was on several gas fronts in Algeria, Brazil, the United States, Spain (Canary Islands) and Africa (Sierra Leone, Liberia and Equatorial Guinea). Overwhelmed by the excessively high budgets of these exploration and drilling projects, the Spanish oil company had to give up the exploration of the Anchois-1 well in 2014.

The British company Chariot drilled the Anchois-2 well to a depth of 2,512 meters using the Stena platform and confirmed the presence of a significant amount of very good quality gas. As part of the Lixus license, Chariot holds a 75% stake and the National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines (ONHM) of Morocco, the remaining 25%. The British company manages energy transition projects across Africa.
