Ceuta Cracks Down on Jet-Ski Use to Combat Smuggling from Morocco

The Maritime Captaincy of Ceuta has decided to restrict the use of jet-skis in its jurisdiction. From now on, these vehicles will no longer be able to travel more than two miles from the coast of the autonomous city or leave Spanish waters. This, in order to fight against the use of these vehicles for the trafficking of migrants and drugs from Morocco.
Jet-skis will be able to navigate in Ceuta during the day when there is "good visibility", "with caution" and without transporting passengers or goods under a commercial regime, the Government Delegation said in a statement. These vehicles will have to be registered in the specific maritime register, have an identification number and a clearly visible plate on the helmet and bodywork.
The measure will come into effect as soon as it is published in the Official Journal of the autonomous city. It delimits an area of "high concentration of moored pleasure boats" in the southern bay, the most used by trafficking networks to transport drugs or migrants from the Moroccan coast to that of Ceuta. In this area, the speed of pleasure boats is limited to a maximum of three knots.
To recall, in mid-July the Spanish Ministry of the Interior deployed 18 agents from the Civil Guard’s Elite Reserve and Security Group (GRS) in Ceuta to "strengthen the fight against the use of jet-skis for the trafficking of migrants and drugs" from Morocco.
