Casablanca Unleashes Drone Army in High-Tech War on Illegal Construction

In Casablanca, the crusade against wild buildings takes on another dimension. Mohamed Mhidia, Wali of the Casablanca-Settat region, is using drones from the Urban Agency whose mission is to detect urban planning offenses.
Casablanca is intensifying its crusade against illegal constructions, particularly unauthorized stables and banquet halls built on agricultural land. "The situation is becoming untenable," confides a source close to the file to Hespress. The caids and pashas are instructed to intervene urgently. They take seriously the reminders to the governors for their lack of diligence in the application of law no. 66.12 on urban planning control. From now on, offenders have a maximum of 10 days to regularize their situation. After this deadline, their buildings will be razed.
Drones are now being used. These devices fly over the Casablanca soil and scrutinize the extension of illegal buildings near ongoing road works, feeding the data transmitted to the central inspections of the Ministry of the Interior. These operations have made it possible to uncover the actions of several authority agents. They come after the passage of the "Commission 360" responsible for promotions in the territorial administration. The reports of this commission risk leading to a cascade of dismissals or transfers.
The intensification of demolitions and slum rehousing projects are not pleasing everyone. A commune president in the province of Médiouna was annoyed by the overflying of a drone above his suspicious "hangars". He would even have threatened to shoot down the device with a hunting rifle.
Furthermore, the operation undermines the electoral strategies of many elected officials, both former and current. Some express concerns about the future electoral redistricting, which could hold many surprises depending on the new urban mapping.
