Casablanca Taxi Drivers Strike Over Work Restrictions and Fare Disputes

The chaos reigning in the taxi sector in Casablanca led to a protest strike on Thursday, October 1st. The Casablanca taxi drivers are unhappy and demand an improvement in their working conditions.
From afar, the sector seems to be governed by well-defined provisions. But this is not the case at all, denounce some strikers to the microphone of l’Économiste. They denounce the fact that the large taxis leaving Casablanca are not authorized to pick up passengers on the return from Berrechid, Settat, Deroua, El Jadida, at the risk of being exposed to heavy penalties such as impounding the vehicle for a period of one month.
With such a measure and the one imposed by the pandemic, which is the use of 50% of the vehicle’s capacity, fares have skyrocketed. The customer finds himself obliged to pay for his round trip, since the vehicle returns empty to the starting station. For example, the fare for a Casa-Berrechid trip is now 50 DH, specifies the same source.
