Casablanca Taxi Drivers Protest Outdated Fares, Demand Rate Increase

During a demonstration organized in Casablanca, taxi drivers and owners expressed their opposition to the rates they consider unsuitable for their needs. They also denounced the delay in subsidies and unfair competition from other modes of transport.

Last weekend, taxi drivers and owners expressed their anger at the fares that have been applied for more than 20 years for transporting passengers between the different neighborhoods of the city, despite the increase in fuel prices and the unfair competition from transport services via mobile applications. According to them, these rates prevent them from working optimally. In unison, they demanded a revision of the rates according to the meters, reports Maroc Diplomatique.

During the demonstration, the professionals also denounced the delay in the payment of the subsidies intended for them. Some claimed that these delays can reach up to 5 months. As a result, they say they are in a difficult situation because they are also suffering from the high cost of living. Another difficulty encountered: the degraded state of the infrastructure, which leads to an increase in the cost of repairing taxis and weighs heavily on their daily budget.

The professionals in the sector also denounced the strong competition from other means of urban transport, such as buses, the tramway and the busway, which undermine their activity. To solve this problem, they called on the authorities to include taxis in the overall urban transport system of the city.
