Casablanca Shipyard: HD Hyundai Targets Africa’s Maritime Future

Morocco’s National Ports Agency (ANP) is preparing to officially appoint the operator of the Casablanca maritime industrial complex, where HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is the leading candidate. The South Korean group, partnered with Moroccan company Somagec in a consortium, is in pole position to secure a 30-year concession. This massive project is designed to support the construction, repair and maintenance of commercial and military fleets, thereby strengthening the Kingdom’s position on the international maritime stage.

The emergence of this shipyard is redrawing the region’s industrial map, attracting the attention of European players such as Spanish company Navantia. By leveraging Korean technology and competitive tax incentives, Morocco is seeking to replicate in the shipbuilding sector the successful model already established in the automotive industry. For HD Hyundai, this first African venture will make it possible to diversify its production capacity beyond Asia and reduce operating costs while capturing growth in emerging markets.
