Casablanca Plans $800,000 Animal Shelter to Address Stray Dog Crisis

Faced with the problem of stray dogs and other animals in the metropolis and its surroundings, the urban municipality of Casablanca wants to build an animal shelter in Mejjatia.
The implementation of this shelter will cost 8 million dirhams and will house stray dogs and other animals on the streets of the city, the alleys of illegal markets or under the roofs of dilapidated houses. According to the daily Assabah, the establishment will be equipped with modern and specific equipment for the well-being of the animals. It will be financed both by Casa Environnement for 5.4 million dirhams and the Directorate of Local Authorities for 2.6 million dirhams.
The newspaper emphasizes that the urban municipality has already approved the creation of this animal shelter in the municipality of Mejjatia. A partnership agreement has already been drawn up with the Local Development Company (SDL) Casa Environnement. It is planned for the future animal shelter a wing equipped with special cages for dangerous dogs, a stable for donkeys and other similar animals as well as a veterinary center and a technical unit that will take care of the remains of dead animals.
The animals concerned by this care are those that will be captured in the streets, those that are housed in the old slaughterhouses whose buildings have been classified as historical heritage of the city.
