Casablanca Overhauls Major Boulevard, Shifts Away from Palm Trees

The city of Casablanca seems to be turning its back on palm trees. While many cities favor this tree, the economic capital seems to be turning its back on it as part of the complete rehabilitation of Zerktouni Street, one of the most famous thoroughfares in the city.
Neglected for years, Zerktouni Street will soon be given a facelift. The local development company "Casa Transports" has initiated a project for its rehabilitation over 4.5 km. Its total cost is estimated at around 112 million dirhams: 55.4 million dirhams for the work between Corniche and Ibrahim Roudani streets and 56.4 million dirhams for the work between Ibrahim Roudani and Mohammed VI streets.
The project includes the creation of parking lots, bicycle paths equipped with separators preventing any contact with cars in order to guarantee the safety of cyclists, as well as widened sidewalks specially dedicated to pedestrians and the planting of plane trees, instead of palm trees, very popular in many Moroccan cities. Not to mention the installation of new traffic lights, the widening of the road, the paving of the sidewalks, the strengthening of green spaces, public lighting and signage. The duration of the project varies between 4 and 5 months.
