Casablanca’s Modern Public Toilet Project Stalls, Opts for Renovations Instead

The Casablanca authorities have failed in the mission to carry out the project of setting up modern toilets, announced two years ago. Instead, they have started to renovate the existing toilets to meet the needs of foreign tourists and the population.
At a total cost of 600,000 dirhams, this project, whose call for tenders was launched in 2018 and awarded in early 2019, is struggling to materialize. For the local authorities, this delay was caused by the coronavirus pandemic. According to Mustapha Lhaya, 2nd vice-president in charge of works and infrastructure, the authorities have decided to review the specifications and modify them by relaunching the calls for tenders at the end of the state of emergency period.
In this regard, the concept has been transformed and the budget reduced. "We have opted for sanitary blocks of 5 toilets at a time instead of the more expensive automatic booths," says the head of the Moulay Rachid district.
Pending the realization of this project in Casablanca, the inhabitants and visitors of the metropolis, beneficiaries of this project, fall back on cafes, restaurants and other public places to relieve themselves. They still have to accept to welcome them.
