Casablanca's $25 Million Zoo Project Faces Further Delays, Now Set for December Opening

Expected last April, after already nearly a year late, the Ain Sebaa zoo (Casablanca) will finally be operational only by the end of the year, unless other last-minute problems arise.

This is what the Director General of Casa Aménagement, Moulay Rachid Idriss, just confirmed to the newspaper Aujourd’hui le Maroc. "The Ain Sebaa zoo will be delivered in December," he promised, without dwelling too much on the reasons for this delay, simply evoking the complexity of the project.

Costing 250 million dirhams, the Ain Sebaa zoo was financed by the Ministry of the Interior, to the tune of 130 million dirhams, the Municipality of Casablanca, for 80 million dirhams, and the Casablanca region, to the tune of 40 million dirhams.

It will include:

• Three geographical areas representing Africa, Asia and America;
• An animal collection of more than 45 species;
• An educational farm;
• Two large picnic areas;
• A restaurant;
• A shop and two kiosks.

The rehabilitation of the new Casablanca zoo had been germinating since 2014, just after the broadcast of several videos on social networks showing the suffering of the animals and the terrible conditions in which they lived.
