Casablanca Markets Warned: Resold Eid Meat from Beggars Poses Health Risks

The meat of Eid offered to beggars is being sold in several markets in Casablanca. Citizens are urged to avoid consuming it at the risk of suffering from certain pathologies.
Alert on the meat offered to beggars during Eid al-Adha. Beggars who obtain this meat sell it at very low prices, well below the prices of slaughterhouses, reports Aljarida24. This year, this phenomenon has taken on a larger scale due to a lack of effective supervision in the distribution of meats. Moreover, the aid does not reach those who are really in need. As a result, charity is transformed into commercial goods, which weakens the effectiveness of charitable efforts aimed at supporting the poorest.
This meat that some Casablanca residents are rushing to buy is harmful to their health, as the meat is exposed for hours to the sun’s rays. In an interview with the same media before Eid, Lotfi Zeghari, a university professor specializing in nutrition and sports sciences, estimated that the rise in temperatures during Eid al-Adha could increase the risks of rapid deterioration of the meat and that the putrefaction of the meat and its color change (green) indicate contamination of the meat by bacteria and parasites. It is therefore not recommended to consume this spoiled meat, which represents a danger to the health of consumers. Also, he advised against removing the rotten part and using the rest, as there is a risk related to the spread of bacteria and toxins.
Finally, the nutritionist recommended buying meat from reliable and approved sources that guarantee the application of safety and hygiene standards recognized by the National Office of Food Safety (ONSSA).
