Casablanca Launches Massive Relocation Plan to Eradicate Slums by 2027

Deprived of housing, more than 2,600 households evicted from slums in Casablanca have received the keys to their new apartments. The authorities are working to rid the kingdom’s economic capital of slums by 2027.

The wali of the Casablanca-Settat region, Mohamed Mhidia, officially handed over the keys to new housing to beneficiary families on Tuesday in the Hay Hassani district. This ceremony took place in the presence of the regional director of Housing and representatives of the company Idmaj Sakane, responsible for executing the project. The relocation of these more than 62,000 families previously residing in slums is part of an ambitious regional plan developed by the Ministry of Interior and the wilaya council to make Casablanca a slum-free city by 2027.

The construction of these new homes and their equipment required an investment of more than 18.5 billion dirhams from the Casablanca prefectural council, State domain services, the urban agency, SDL Casablanca Aménagement, as well as other public and private organizations. In Hay Hassani, some 2,600 families from 41 douars will be relocated. In the first phase, 991 completed apartments were delivered. The second phase should be completed by 2026.

The project aims to sustainably improve the living conditions of the families concerned and to meet their essential needs. To facilitate the processing of files and ensure transparency in housing allocation, the authorities have set up a single counter grouping the Ministry of Territorial Planning, local authorities, banks, representatives of Casablanca Aménagement, and legalization services. Wali Mohamed Mhidia is closely monitoring the progress of the program and ensuring its diligent implementation. The objective is to offer a modern and structured urban framework to the populations.
