Casablanca Launches Major Highway Expansion Ahead of 2030 World Cup

Numerous highway projects are underway to improve traffic flow in the city of Casablanca, in preparation for the 2030 World Cup.

The Moroccan Motorway Company (ADM) is multiplying large-scale projects in Casablanca to transform the city’s road network and improve traffic flow, in anticipation of the 2030 World Cup. The Tit Mellil–Berrechid highway is one of them. With a cost of 2.5 billion dirhams, this infrastructure, whose construction began in October 2023, aims to connect the Casablanca bypass highway to those of Marrakech and Béni Mellal, covering 30 km. The project includes the construction of two interchanges, one on the Médiouna road (RR315) and the other on the RN9 to serve Mohammed V airport and Deroua, as well as four viaducts, including one spanning the Oued Hassar, recalls the daily newspaper Les Inspirations Éco.

"The project is progressing at a good pace, with a completion rate of 65%. We aim to put it into service before the end of 2025, several months ahead of the contractual deadline of April 23, 2026," assures Omar Sikkal, general manager of ADM Project, the subsidiary in charge of major projects. The two black spots of the network, the Sidi Maarouf and Aïn Harrouda junctions, will be completely rehabilitated. A three-level hybrid interchange will be built on the first one to absorb the 140,000 vehicles that pass through it daily. The work requires an investment of 500 million dirhams and involves the construction of eight structures, the widening to 2x5 lanes of several sections, and the construction of new ramps. The project is currently at a 40% execution rate and its delivery is scheduled for the end of 2025.

The transformation of Aïn Harrouda concerns the section between Mohammedia West and the Aïn Harrouda junction, through which 120,000 vehicles pass daily. With a cost of 750 million dirhams, the project includes eight lanes in each direction and an elevated intersection at the industrial zone roundabout. In addition to these projects, ADM has announced the imminent start of work on the Rabat-Casablanca continental highway, with a length of 59 km. This project, with a budget of 6.5 billion dirhams, aims to facilitate access to the future Hassan II Grand Stadium in Casablanca, under construction in Benslimane. "The contracts are in the process of being awarded. The start of work is imminent, with delivery scheduled for 2028," announces Omar Sikkal. The infrastructure will be largely built by Moroccan companies (75% of investments).
