Casablanca Hospital Scandal: Eye Injections Cause Blindness, Police Investigate

The National Brigade of the Judicial Police (BNPJ) is now conducting an investigation into the injection affair, which has caused patients at the August 20, 1953 hospital in Casablanca to lose their sight.

Following the transmission by the Attorney General at the Court of Appeal of Casablanca of the file, the National Brigade of the Judicial Police (BNPJ) is responsible for conducting investigations into the Bevacizumab injections, which have caused patients at the August 20, 1953 hospital in Casablanca to lose their sight. The BNPJ elements will have to try to understand "how a drug known to treat the retina of the eye could have turned into a substance that accelerates the destruction of the cells of this organ", reports the Arabic daily Assabah.

They will also have to ensure that the health protocol has been respected, Bevacizumab being prescribed for completely different pathologies. In other words, a vial can be used for patients suffering from different diseases. Investigators will have to consult the medical records of the patients, try to find out if the drug was stored under good conditions. Several stakeholders, within the hospital but also outside, will be heard as part of this investigation. This should put an end to all the other investigations opened since the incident broke out.

At least 16 people lost their sight after receiving Bevacizumab injections at the August 20, 1953 hospital in Casablanca. About fifteen of these victims had filed a complaint. Some of them have already stated their intention to take legal action against the hospital.
