Casablanca Faces Critical Water Shortage as Dam Levels Plummet

Water scarcity is increasingly being felt in Casablanca. The president of the urban municipality, Nabila Rmili, sounded the alarm during a recent extraordinary session of the prefectural council. The Al Massira dam, which supplies the southern districts of the city in particular, is experiencing a critical situation due to the water deficit.
Municipalities like Ouled Azzouz and Dar Bouazza could thus face drinking water shortages in the coming days. "The situation is not very rosy," said Nabila Rmili, calling on the various stakeholders to intensify their efforts to complete the piping work between the north and south of the metropolis.
To deal with this crisis, the city is relying on the transfer of water from the Bouregreg storage to the southern area, pending the commissioning of the OCP group’s desalination plant. Nevertheless, the president of the municipality recalled that water consumption had increased considerably in recent months, particularly in July, August and September.
Faced with this worrying situation, Nabila Rmili urged elected officials and NGOs to raise public awareness of the need to reduce water consumption. A 10% flow reduction has already been implemented. The president did not rule out the possibility of water cuts if the situation does not improve.
