Casablanca Cracks Down on Street Carts, Citing Traffic Concerns

The city of Casablanca has decided to put an end to the activities of cart drivers in its streets, accused of obstructing traffic. A large-scale campaign has been initiated to free the public space occupied, according to the local authorities, in an anarchic way by these vendors.
This is one of the demands of the inhabitants to which the current municipal council has committed to give satisfaction, said the president of the municipal council, Nabila Rmili, stressing that for several years, animal-drawn carts have been proliferating in the neighborhoods and streets of Casablanca and disrupting the public space.
Faced with this phenomenon, new measures have been taken and a liberation operation has been launched in recent days, she announced. Teams are carrying out systematic seizures of carts and at the same time preventing the occupation of public roads in various avenues. All vendors have been invited to return to the space set up in the markets to carry out their activities.
This intervention is "in the spirit of the joint adoption of a decree prohibiting the circulation of animal-drawn carts in the urban area," said the municipal authority, adding that "we no longer accept to see animal-drawn carts in circulation in Casablanca, yet qualified as a smart city."
