Casablanca Cracks Down on Neglected Building Facades With Fines

Casablanca is launching a renovation program for degraded facades with a budget of 15 million dirhams. Property owners who refuse to clean or repaint their buildings may see the city carry out the work at their expense.

Casablanca wants to put an end to dirty, damaged, or abandoned facades. The company Casablanca Aménagement has launched a cleaning, repair, and painting program for buildings and houses in the economic capital.

Three companies have won the contracts planned for this operation. Each will oversee work valued at approximately five million dirhams, bringing the total budget to around 15 million dirhams.

The program comes after the implementation of the regulation dedicated to facade maintenance. This allows the municipality to ask property owners to restore their buildings to proper condition, and also to penalize those who delay taking action.

Thus, affected property owners will first receive a notification giving them one month to carry out the requested work.

The city will do the work for them and send the bill

In the absence of a response, a final warning will give them an additional fifteen days. If the work is still not underway, the municipality may intervene itself and demand that property owners reimburse the expenses, in accordance with current procedures.

Fines are also provided for non-compliance with the new rules. The measure targets in particular buildings whose facades have severely deteriorated in densely populated neighborhoods.

Local authorities had noted, through several reports conducted in the districts, the multiplication of poorly maintained buildings. Some facades show degraded paint, cracks, or significant traces of dirt.

The city thus wants to improve the appearance of its main thoroughfares and the areas most frequently visited by tourists. This project accompanies other work undertaken in Casablanca before the upcoming sporting and international events.

For property owners, the choice will now be limited: carry out the work themselves within the imposed deadlines or let the municipality handle it, with a bill to settle upon completion.
