Casablanca Clinic Owner Denied Bail in Major Healthcare Fraud Case

Accused and prosecuted, among other things, for care fraud and fraud, the owner of the Chifaa clinic in Casablanca and his co-defendants were hoping for release on bail. But the Prosecution firmly opposed it, citing the seriousness of the alleged offenses.
Even if the accused in this case are willing to pay the bail, whatever the amount that will be set, the public prosecutor considers that in view of the offenses, they deserve pre-trial detention. This is what the investigating judge decided after the Prosecution rejected the request made by the defense.
Indeed, the public prosecutor has estimated that the alleged acts against the main accused, Dr. El Hassan Tazi, as well as the other co-accused are so serious that this option cannot be considered. But after several hours of pleadings, the Casablanca Court of Appeal decided to begin the examination of this request, during a session scheduled for Tuesday, reports the daily Al Ahdath Al Maghribia.
Convinced that the evidence they have and which incriminates the accused is very serious, the public prosecutor considers that the judge will have no choice but to maintain pre-trial detention. He expressly demands that the law be applied to all the accused in this case, especially since the complaints have multiplied, after the incarceration of Dr. Tazi.
The eight accused placed in detention since April 2 are being prosecuted for their involvement in the constitution of a criminal gang aimed at fraudulently collecting sums of money from donors, intended to cover the medical care costs of people living in precariousness and hospitalized in the clinic belonging to the main accused and in which most of the other arrested persons worked.
These eight individuals are also suspected of overcharging and false prescriptions. Among the people defrauded, there are dozens of businessmen, including the CEO of a supermarket chain, a senior banking executive, one of the best-known caterers in Morocco, the daughter of a government official and a wealthy national of one of the Gulf countries.
