Casablanca’s Busway Disrupted by Animal-Drawn Carts, Authorities Seek Solution

In Casablanca, carts pulled by mules, donkeys and horses hinder the smooth circulation of the busway. Local authorities are struggling to find a sustainable solution to this phenomenon that damages the image of the city.
This situation is more pronounced in Lissasfa and Oulfa where the carts, the main means of selling fruits and vegetables and transporting them, find themselves on the lanes exclusively dedicated to the busway, forcing the drivers of these buses to make stops to allow their passage.
Local stakeholders have denounced on Facebook the laxity of the local authorities and in particular the mayor of the economic capital, Nabila Rmili, who has failed to find a viable solution to this problem that affects the daily life of road users.
The phenomenon of carts persists in the city, despite the decision of the municipal council dated October 17 last to ban their use for the transport of goods and people, or as a means of street vending.
The mayor of the city had also installed "no entry for animal-drawn carts" signs in the districts of Ain Sebaâ Hay Mohammadi, Moulay Rachid, Sidi Bernoussi Sidi Moumen, Ain Chock, Casablanca Anfa, Ben Msik, Hay Hassani, and Derb Sultan-El Fida.
