Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Claims 9 Lives in Tangier, Morocco

In a matter of days, the city of Tanger recorded the deaths of nine people, including four members of the same family, a lawyer, and a couple. They were all found unconscious in their homes, suffocated by carbon monoxide, following a butane gas leak.
This is the case, for example, of a moqaddem. Intrigued by his absence, the colleagues of the authority’s auxiliary went to his home located in the Mghougha Saghira district. On the spot, they discovered the lifeless bodies of the moqaddem (28 years old), his wife (22 years old) and their two children (aged 18 and 6 months) in the bedroom. These deaths occurred following the inhalation of butane gas, which escaped during the night from a gas cylinder in the kitchen of their home, reports Assabah, which notes that butane is used in the kitchen, gas water heaters and traditional heating.
This case adds to another that occurred last Monday, in a house in the Souani district of Tanger. Here, the daily reports, a couple died, while their three children were saved, in extremis, after being transported in serious condition to the Mohammed V regional hospital.
According to the associative and medical actors in the city, these accidents are recurrent in this period of sharp drop in temperatures in the northern region. In most cases, they are due to the misuse of cheap Chinese-brand water heaters, which would be defective.
