CAN 2025: When the FBI comes to take security lessons in Morocco
This is a major recognition of the Kingdom’s security expertise. A high-level delegation from the FBI spent three days in Morocco to closely observe the system deployed by the DGSN during the 2025 CAN. The Americans’ objective: to draw inspiration from Moroccan expertise to prepare their own World Cup in 2026.
The American federal agents were on an observation mission in Rabat from January 4 to 6. Led by Douglas Olson and Kevin Kowalski, two FBI operations directors, the delegation came to analyze the "Moroccan model" of managing major sporting events.
Their immersion began on the ground, at the Prince Moulay Abdellah sports complex, during the Morocco-Tanzania match. The American experts scrutinized every detail: from the deployment of units on the ground to filtering techniques, including the use of drones and high-precision cameras.
They also visited the African Security Cooperation Center. This platform, a real control tower where the police forces of the participating countries collaborate, particularly interested the visitors, especially for digital coordination and the management of "spotters" responsible for supervising foreign supporters.
Morocco, a laboratory for the 2026 World Cup
This visit is not anecdotal. As the United States prepares to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Washington is seeking to refine its security protocols. Morocco, recognized for its efficiency and anticipation of risks, is seen as an example to follow.
The FBI’s program also included observing the Algeria-DRC match at the Moulay Hassan stadium, confirming the interest in managing the flow of international supporters, a major requirement of FIFA.
Beyond the technical aspects, this mission strengthens the security alliance between Rabat and Washington. A strategic exchange of expertise that will serve both nations, as Morocco itself has its sights set on hosting the 2030 World Cup.
