CAF Intervenes in Algeria-Morocco Jersey Dispute, Berkane Team Returns to Hotel

After a long wait at Algiers’ Houari Boumediene airport due to the blocking by Algerian customs of its luggage including its jerseys containing a map of Morocco integrating the Sahara, the delegation of the Renaissance sportive de Berkane finally agreed on Friday to return to its hotel.
In an official letter, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) informed the management of the Renaissance sportive de Berkane that it will be responsible for delivering its jerseys bearing a map of Morocco integrating the Sahara, inviting the players and staff of the Moroccan club to return to their hotel.
Sources have specified to Al3omk that CAF has even authorized the Renaissance of Berkane to return to Morocco without playing its match against the Union Sportive de la Médina d’Alger (USMA), if it did not recover its luggage and its official jerseys held by the Algerian customs.
The delegation of the Moroccan club also had clashes with the Algerian security forces upon disembarking from the plane, the latter having tried to expel the Moroccan players from the airport. "We don’t want you here. Get out of here!" said one of the senior Algerian police officers.
Renaissance sportive de Berkane is expected to face USMA this Sunday, in the first leg of the Confederation Cup semi-finals. The return leg is scheduled for next Sunday, April 28.
