Burundi Closes Consulate in Western Sahara, Cites Budget Constraints

For "budgetary reasons and reciprocity", the Republic of Burundi announced on Saturday the closure of its Consulate General in Laâyoune.
Burundi opened the doors of its consular representation in Laâyoune on February 28, 2020. In a tweet, the authorities indicated that this closure does not detract from the country’s recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces.
The closure of this Consulate is in no way a sign of a breakdown in relations between the two countries. "Our embassy in Rabat will remain operational and in return, Burundi expects the opening of an embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco in Burundi with residence in Bujumbura, the economic capital," adds the Burundian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on its official Twitter account.
