Brussels Fireworks Incident Leaves 13-Year-Old Girl with Severe Hand Injury

Amina Thimou, 13, will have to live the rest of her life with four fingers missing. The girl of Moroccan origin tried to throw one of the fireworks fired by minors towards the balcony of the apartment where she lives with her parents and brother, in the center of Brussels.

After an eight-hour surgical procedure, Amina finds herself without four of her fingers. "I thank the boys who harassed my son and who have injured my dear daughter for life," her father ironically protests. Mohamed Thimou was traveling in Morocco to attend the funeral of his father when the incident occurred, reports Nieuwsblad.be. A group of young people from the neighborhood fired dangerous fireworks towards their balcony, breaking the window and injuring Amina. "The power of their firecrackers must have been incredible."

The perpetrators of this criminal act were identified and arrested by the Brussels justice system. They are three minors who acted with the intention of settling scores with Mohamed’s 15-year-old son. The father accuses these young people of harassing his son for some time. "They know each other in the neighborhood and they have even already come here. The problem is that they continued to bother him late at night. On several occasions, I sent them back to the door at eleven o’clock at night. A fifteen-year-old boy has no business being outside at that time. A few days ago, I was still in Morocco, and the dispute then escalated. That day, when he came home, he called my wife in a panic, who went to pick him up at the metro station. He didn’t dare come home alone. He felt that something serious was going to happen," Mohamed recounts.

While Amina was alone in their apartment in the heart of Brussels, the accused threw firecrackers towards the balcony. "Suddenly, there were huge explosions and the windows shattered. Amina rushed to the balcony, picked up the second firecracker, by far the most powerful, and tried to throw it outside. That’s when it exploded, in her hand," he details. Seriously injured and losing a lot of blood, the girl was rushed to the Delta Hospital in Brussels by ambulance after a neighbor called for help.

Amina underwent two operations. It was during the last one, which took place on Saturday and lasted eight hours, that the girl lost four of her fingers, despite all the surgeon’s efforts. "Amina’s palm is shattered, and four of her fingers could not be saved," her father confides, very outraged. "It’s terrible. Not only has she lost her hand for the rest of her life, but the psychological damage is also enormous. She no longer dares to go home. Can we really blame her? A kind of bomb exploded in her hand. And why? Because a group of bullies thought it necessary to fire fireworks without reason on our apartment. I can’t conceive of it." The minors have been placed in a closed institution under the supervision of the competent judge. The investigation is ongoing to determine their involvement in this incident.
