Brussels: Mahfoud jumps into the canal and saves a man from drowning
By throwing himself into the canal to rescue a man who was drowning, Mahfoud averted the worst this Friday morning in Brussels. This spontaneous act of bravery put an end to a certain fatal outcome, transforming a routine patrol into a heroic rescue.
The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m., near the Van Praet bridge and the Docks shopping center. Alerted to the presence of a person in distress in the water, Mahfoud, a Bruxelles-Propreté agent, did not hesitate to jump in to help him. He managed to keep the victim out of the water until the arrival of a boat from the Port Authority, allowing him to be taken care of by the emergency services.
The victim, whose vital prognosis was engaged at the time of his extraction, was urgently transferred to the hospital. While the circumstances of his fall remain undetermined, the agent’s quick intervention was decisive.
"Walter Derieuw, spokesperson for the Brussels fire department, praised this courage while recalling the rules of caution. Describing the intervention as a "heroic act", he nevertheless insisted on the risks of thermal shock or injuries related to submerged objects, recommending the use of the ladders placed along the quays for this type of maneuver."
