Brussels to Implement Proactive Testing to Combat Housing Discrimination

In order to effectively combat housing discrimination, Brussels wants to equip itself this summer with new tools, including proactive testing in this area. A draft ordinance has been adopted in parliament to strengthen existing texts.
Initiated by the Secretary of State for Housing, Nawal Ben Hamou, the new measure aims to remedy the weaknesses of the existing system, which has produced few results since its adoption, due to the cumbersome nature of the procedure, reports Belga.
Ultimately, the new regulation plans to authorize proactive tests. The Regional Housing Inspection will be able to hire actors to carry out testing on its behalf. Similarly, associations working on housing integration will be able to carry out testing at the request of the victim or the Inspection.
Regarding the criteria, only the prohibition of provocation is maintained as a prerequisite. The refusal of reasonable accommodation for a tenant with a disability is also assimilated to direct discrimination.
