Brain Drain: Over 6,000 Moroccan Doctors Work in France Amid Home Country Shortage

Nearly 6,150 doctors are working in French hospitals while Morocco suffers from a severe shortage of health personnel.
During a session devoted to questioning government members on various subjects, the Islamist parliamentarian indicated that 20% of the 8,000 graduates from Moroccan higher education institutions, specialized in the fields of information and communication technologies, are leaving the country. According to Abdelali Hamieddine, the equivalent of the number of engineers trained each year (600) in the kingdom travels to other countries in search of a better life.
The statistics are alarming in the health sector. Nearly 6,150 Moroccan doctors work in French hospitals, the same source specifies. For the parliamentarian, there are 14,000 Moroccan doctors installed in different countries and who have contributed to the fight against Covid-19, while Morocco suffers from a severe shortage of medical personnel.
This situation costs several million dirhams. The number 2 of the Party for Justice and Development (PJD) confides that the training of a doctor costs the taxpayers nearly one million dirhams against some 800,000 dirhams for an engineer. According to the parliamentarian, youth unemployment and the agreements signed by national universities with foreign higher education institutions contribute to the brain drain.
