Boycott: Will Algerian dates soon be driven off Moroccan tables?
As the month of Ramadan approaches, calls for a boycott of Deglet Nour dates are multiplying in Morocco, driven by citizen concerns about the health safety of imported products. This situation places the authorities in the obligation to reconcile the protection of public health with the imperatives of supplying the national market.
Many Moroccans are expressing their concern on social media about possible contamination or non-compliance with health standards. These questions are accompanied by requests addressed to the government for the implementation of rigorous laboratory analyses or a temporary suspension of imports until the facts are clarified.
For the time being, neither the Ministry of Agriculture nor the National Office of Sanitary Safety of Food Products have communicated an official position on the maintenance of these imports.
The pressure should intensify in the coming weeks due to the seasonal increase in date consumption. Deglet Nour represents a significant share of Algerian agricultural exports and the supply on the Moroccan market.
