Belgium: six months in prison for a bag of chips
A Moroccan faces six months in prison at the Liège criminal court for stealing a bag of chips from a vehicle. A minor offense explained before justice by a serious criminal record.
On the morning of September 21, 2025, on rue Surlet in the Outremeuse neighborhood, Mohammed, 26, spots a driver parking his Citroën Berlingo. With a furtive gesture, he manages to open the passenger door a fraction of a second before the vehicle’s automatic lock engages. After carefully waiting for the owner to disappear, he enters the interior to steal a modest bag of chips. His crime is however captured by the urban video surveillance center, which guides a police patrol to the suspect, arrested as he peacefully savors his loot against a wall.

This theft of a product worth less than two euros finds an unusual echo before such a court. Of Moroccan origin, the defendant is an asylum seeker living in precarity and homelessness in Belgium. To justify his act at the bar, the young man simply stated that he "was far too hungry." A distress that fails, however, to mask an already well-filled criminal record, as reported by the media Sudinfo.

The young man is indeed not facing the magistrates for the first time. Convicted in 2021 for indecent assault, he then received in June 2025 three years in prison, half of which suspended, for theft with violence. Recently, he was again sanctioned with fifteen months of imprisonment for other larcenies. Faced with this reoffending, the public prosecutor’s representative demands six additional months in prison. His counsel, Master Bosquin, argues instead for the absorption of this sentence with the previous one. The final decision will be handed down in May.
