Belgium Seeks to Curb Talent Exodus in National Soccer Team Selection

The new sports director of the Belgian Football Association, Vincent Mannaert, has identified the issue of dual nationals as a priority project. In an interview, he outlined his vision and the measures envisaged to stem the flight of talents to other selections, particularly to Morocco.

The current situation is considered unsatisfactory. Mannaert denounces "too vague" rules that allow players to change their sporting nationality, even after having represented Belgium. He therefore calls on FIFA to clarify and simplify the regulations.

Mannaert’s central proposal is to set a deadline: 18 years old. According to him, a player should definitively choose his sporting nationality at the age of majority. A 30-day deadline would then be granted to formalize this decision. This measure aims to limit uncertainties and reduce the pressures, particularly family, that can influence the choices of young players.

The sports director also emphasizes the existing disparities between national legislations on the acquisition of nationality. He advocates for a harmonization of FIFA regulations, considering that the Belgian federation cannot act alone on this issue.

Mannaert is aware of the increased competition from other federations, which are investing in the identification and recruitment of dual nationals. He cites the case of Morocco in particular. However, he categorically excludes the use of financial arguments to attract players, a common practice according to him. "This will not be the case for Belgium, at least not with me," he said.

Despite these challenges, the sports director highlights the attachment of certain players, such as Malik Fofana and Jorthy Mokio, to the Belgian national team. Mokio’s selection, justified by his versatility, illustrates Mannaert’s determination to rely on clear sporting criteria.
