Baccalaureate Exam Cheaters Face Steep Penalties: Up to 5 Years in Prison, Heavy Fines

Law 2.13, validated in 2018 on the eve of the baccalaureate exams, is still in force, and imposes severe disciplinary measures against cheaters. Penalties can go up to 5 years in prison and 100,000 dirhams in fines.

The law has considered all fraud schemes both inside and around the exam room, and has equipped itself with a legal arsenal that could deter any offender. Its objective is to enforce the regulations specific to the exams.

A few weeks before the exams, the Regional Academies of Education and Training (AREF) are mobilizing to conduct an awareness campaign aimed at combating exam fraud. According to Le360, flyers have been distributed and workshops organized to imbue students with the exam climate and raise awareness of the risks incurred in case of cheating.

Last year, more than 1,200 candidates were caught cheating. These figures are official since they come from government spokesman Mustapha Khalfi. A majority of cheaters (86%) used their cell phone to either communicate with people outside or copy answers.
