Atlas Lions Roar into World Cup Quarter-Finals, Stunning South Korea
The Moroccan under-20 national team continues its journey at the World Cup in Chile. After a hard-fought round of 16 match, the Atlas Lions have qualified for the quarter-finals of the competition, a performance they have only achieved twice before.
Facing South Korea in the night from Thursday to Friday, the Moroccans won 2-1. They benefited from a quick opening goal, as early as the 8th minute, thanks to an own goal from the Korean defender Shin.
After this favorable start, the match remained very balanced. South Korea tried to come back, but was faced with a solid Moroccan defense and its goalkeeper, Benchaouch. It was ultimately Morocco who doubled the lead in the second half, with a header from Yassir Zabiri in the 58th minute.
The reduction of the score by South Korea on a penalty kick at the very end of the match was not enough to change the outcome of the match. With this victory, the Atlas Lions qualify for the quarter-finals for the third time in their history. They will face the United States there.
