Atlas Handshake: Live-fire exercises and submarine hunting, the US Navy flexes its muscles off Agadir
The American destroyer USS Paul Ignatius and the Moroccan frigate Tarik Ben Ziyad conducted joint exercises in the Atlantic. The "Atlas Handshake" exercise, punctuated by live-fire drills, aims to strengthen the interoperability of the two fleets in the face of maritime security threats.
The exercise took place from December 2 to 4 after a stopover of the American ship in Agadir. The Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer and the Moroccan frigate carried out a series of technical training sessions designed to test their ability to operate together. The program included visit, board, search and seizure (VBSS) simulations, anti-submarine warfare exercises, as well as live-fire sessions on a Moroccan training range.
The commander of the American ship, Joseph Phillips, specified the operational objective of this mission. According to him, these training sessions are essential to improve the "collective lethality" and the readiness of the forces in the face of illicit activities. The cooperation specifically targets illegal fishing, trafficking, piracy and other maritime crimes that weigh on regional stability.
The US Ambassador, Duke Buchan III, described this military partnership as solid and growing. He recalled the shared commitment to security in Africa and the protection of the flow of global trade. The USS Paul Ignatius, deployed with the 6th Fleet, is thus continuing its mission to strengthen the operational capabilities of allies in Europe and Africa.
