US Army Chief Reaffirms Crucial Strategic Partnership with Morocco

General James C. McConville, the 40th Chief of Staff of the US Army, met in Rabat with Moroccan Defense officials. Facing Abdellatif Loudiyi, Minister Delegate to the Head of Government in charge of National Defense Administration, and General Abdelfattah Louarak, Inspector General of the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces (FAR), the American military reaffirmed the importance his country attaches to the US-Moroccan strategic partnership.

The meeting took place at the FAR headquarters in Rabat. General McConville was given the honors due to his rank before participating in a luncheon at the officers’ mess. "I believe in peace through strength and that strength comes from a strong army as well as a whole-of-government approach and powerful allies and partners," he said.

He stressed that the partnership with Morocco has lasted for many years and remains up to expectations in terms of defense and security. "The meeting with our long-standing and highly competent partners in Morocco allowed us to discuss ways to further strengthen cooperation on common priorities such as training, professional military schools and the development of non-commissioned officers," said James McConville.

Among the other topics discussed between the officials were the implementation of the US-Moroccan "roadmap for defense cooperation" signed in 2020, which aims to work on strengthening Morocco’s military modernization and the synergy of efforts to effectively address regional threats.

Morocco’s annual participation in more than 100 military exercises with the United States, including African Lion, the largest annual military exercise in Africa - which returned to Morocco in June after a one-year interruption due to the Covid-19 pandemic, was also discussed.
