American Tourist Scammed in Fez: $45,000 Carpet Scheme Sparks Investigation

An American tourist was scammed in Fez by a tour guide who forced her to pay 8 zarabis (traditional Moroccan carpets) for an amount of 450,000 dirhams.
The American tourist’s friends confirmed to her that the zarabis purchased were overpriced, which prompted her to return them to the store owner and recover her money, local sources told the newspaper Al3omk.
Despite the apologies of the tour guide and the owner of the zarabis store, the tourist recounted her misadventure on a global tourism website, sparking a wave of comments and criticism on social media and the opening of an investigation by the Ministries of Tourism and the Interior.
The tourism professionals in Fez, for their part, condemned the "immoral" behavior of the tour guide. "The author of this scam is one of the owners of the riads in the medina, and his excessive fortune has increased suddenly after owning a small house in Fez, probably because of the scams that tourists face in the city of Fez," explains Abdelhak, an unregulated tour guide, calling on the authorities to regulate the sector.
